YiFan Conveyor - Tagagawa ng Conveyor at One-Stop Solution Service Provider para sa Truck Loading Conveyor at Flexible Roller Conveyor System.
A conveyor should run straight. Simple, right? However, in the real world, belts go rogue. They drift left, then right, and suddenly your whole line slows down. Products fall and parts wear out more quickly and downtime begins to hurt your bottom line.
This is a very common issue with some systems such as a belt conveyor. Even a minor tracking problem can become a huge nightmare when overlooked. The good news? The majority of the belt tracking issues can be fixed and most of them can be avoided.
The good part? The majority of conveyor belt tracking issues are readily identifiable and can be resolved. In this guide, you will know what causes these problems, how to identify them quickly, and easy methods to get your conveyor running once again.
A conveyor belt does not drift without reason. There is something that drives it out of position. The good thing is that as soon as you know the cause, fixing becomes easy.
The most common causes of tracking problems are as follows:
The rollers must be straight, otherwise the belt will drift. The belt can be pushed out of position even at small angles. This is commonly observed in flexible powered roller conveyor and telescopic roller conveyor systems.
When the loading of the material is more on one side, the belt will follow the weight. It occurs frequently in loading unloading conveyor systems where the objects are loaded in a hurry without balance.
Tracking problems can be caused by old rollers, bent frames or worn pulleys. In a telescopic belt conveyor, wear occurs at a higher rate since the belt is constantly rising and falling.
The tension of the belt should be balanced.
● Too loose → belt slips and wanders
● Too tight → belt pulls unevenly
The debris, dust, or spilled material under the belt or on the rollers may lift the belt slightly and move it out of the track. This is particularly prevalent in high-throughput processes involving a lorry loading conveyor or other equipment in dusty conditions.
There are times when the problem is the belt itself.
● Uneven thickness
● Damaged edges
● Poor joint or splice
These problems may lead to tracking problems, despite everything else appearing to be okay.
You do not require any fancy tools to detect a tracking problem. All you need to do is to watch the conveyor.
Your belt is telling you something when you see:
● The rubbing or riding of the belt against the frame or side guards.
● The spilling of material on one side of the belt.
● Uneven wear along the edges of the belt.
● Squealing or squeaking noises from the sides.
● Belt damage, such as fraying or tearing at the edges.
When you notice these, your belt conveyor needs maintenance.
Watch the belt running a couple of minutes before you begin to adjust anything. Observe where it starts to drift. Does it drift at the same point every time, or does it wander? This says a lot.
Move along the entire conveyor and verify that all rollers are square to the frame and spin freely. Take special notice of the tail pulley (the one at the loading end). This is the beginning of the majority of the tracking issues.
Is material being loaded directly on the centre of the belt? If not, adjust your chutes or hoppers in such a way that the material drops in the center. This is particularly critical on the loading unloading conveyor that is employed in high-paced logistics settings.
Slowly rotate the belt and see when the splice passes through. If the belt shifts every time the splice comes around, that's your problem.
Look under the belt and on all rollers to see if there is any material or debris stuck. Any tiny chip of hard substance lodged under a roller can make the entire belt to shift.
Too loose and the belt sags and drifts. Too tight and you are placing undue strain on the bearings. Refer to your telescopic conveyor manufacturer's tension specs.
After finding the cause, here is how to correct it:
|
Problem |
Fix |
|
Misaligned tail pulley |
Move one side of the tail pulley mount a little in the direction the belt is following. |
|
Off-centre loading |
Reposition loading chutes to centre material on the belt. |
|
Bad splice |
Re-splice the square of the belt with a proper splicing tool. |
|
Sticky rollers |
Change seized or damaged rollers. |
|
Material buildup |
Clean under-belt area and add belt scrapers. |
|
Loose belt |
Adjust the take-up system to correct tension. |
Pro tip: It is best to always make small improvements: a quarter turn at a time when making pulley adjustments. Then run the belt for a few minutes to observe the effect and readjust again. Hurrying this process does not help but worsens it.
It is not possible to fix everything with an adjustment. It is time to replace when:
● Belt: Belt has a lot of frayed edges, has cuts or holes, or is stretched beyond adjustment range
● Rollers: Seized, visibly bent, or have significant flat spots.
● Pulley lagging: Worn smooth or cracking; lagging provides grip, and assists tracking.
● Belt scrapers: If they're no longer making proper contact, they're just dragging and not cleaning.
It is more cost-effective to replace worn parts early than late. A seized roller costs far less than a full belt replacement.
1. Why is my belt conveyor continuously moving on one side?
This is typically a result of misalignment, crooked loading, or tension issues.
2. How frequently should I check my conveyor?
Do a visual check daily during operation and a full inspection weekly. High-volume operations should check more frequently.
3. Can I troubleshoot tracking issues on my own?
Yes, most problems are not complicated. Most problems are resolved by alignment and cleaning.
4. Do Flexible Conveyor systems have more tracking issues?
Not always, but they should be properly installed and checked regularly.
5. When should I upgrade my conveyor system?
When issues occur frequently, or parts wear fast, then it is time to upgrade.
6: My belt tracks fine when empty but drifts when loaded. Why?
This normally indicates an off-centre loading point or unbalanced load distribution. The weight of the belt varies with loads and enhances minor alignment problems.
The issue with belt tracking is frequent but not something that you need to tolerate. It takes periodic inspections, well-kept equipment, and a bit of patience in making corrections to ensure that your conveyor is running straight and strong.
Regardless of the size of your flexible gravity roller conveyor or large truck loading conveyor, whether it is in the warehouse or not, the principles of operation are the same: ensure that everything is clean and in place and is properly tensioned.
